Hey there readers! I hope you are able to survive the hot summer heat! Over here in Los Angeles, things have been heating up with the announcements of the Emmy nominations. In case you haven't heard, this year there are some PRETTY INTERESTING shows being nominated.
First of all, the show to take the most nominations this year is the HBO show "Mildred Pierce", which received 21 nominations.Funnily enough, the show itself, which stars Academy Award winning actress Kate Winslet, didn't actually do very well with viewers when it came out. However, for some reason it seems to be a bit show for the Academy.
Another show that swept away many nominations this year is the critically acclaimed show "Mad Men", which has won Emmys the past few years for "best drama series", but the star of the show, Jon Hamm, has never won for Best Actor. I am totally hoping that he FINALLY walks away with an Emmy this year. If there is ANY time that he can do it, it is this year, since his main rival, Bryan Cranston, who has won Best Actor in a Drama the past three years for his role in the tv series "Breaking Bad", in which he plays a teacher who sells drugs. This year Cranston isn't eligible because the show wasn't on air during the eligibility dates. SO many critics are saying that this WILL be the year for Jon Hamm.
My personal favorite in both the Lead Actress and Lead Actor for Best Drama goes to the actor and actress team that play husband/wife in "Friday Night Lights", which unfortunately got canceled after its 5th season last year. I find this show to be one of the best written shows on television in the past several years. It is a show that is based on the movie "Friday Night Lights", which was based on a book about football in a small city in Texas. But the tv show is much more than that...it has some of the most interesting and believable characters and the character development on the show is amazing. Finally this is the only show on television in a while that has ACTUALLY filmed at the location of where the show is supposed to take place. Almost all the shows nowadays are all filmed in the studio or on set someplace other than the show location. But "Friday Night Lights" was filmed in Austin, Texas.
Another very interesting development this year is that ALL nominees in the Best Comedy Show this year are from networks!! (as in the big tv stations ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX) This is the first time that this has happened in quite a few decades. The past few decades, of course, cable has played a very strong presence in television, and has also seen a very big piece of the Emmys. So it is quite amazing that this year cable was shut out of the comedy series nominations. I think one of my favorites this year in the comedy category has to be actor Steve Carell, who is up for Best Actor for his unforgettable role as Michael Scott in the hit tv series "The Office". This past season was his last season, so there are many people who are hoping that the amazingly talented actor will finally be recognized for his work in the tv show.
I also must say that I am rooting for Laura Linney, who is nominated for Best Actress in her role in "The Big C", a very dark comedy coming out of cable this year. Linney does a wonderful job portraying a married school teacher who finds out that she has stage 4 cancer, and I have thoroughly enjoyed watching the show and seeing how she and her family cope with this sudden tragedy that was thrust on them. Laura Linney also is the executive producer for this show, and has been very involved in the casting for it as well, and I just really think that she got it right with this one.
Anyway, readers, have you checked out the Emmy nominations? Were some of your favorite shows nominated? If so, which ones? I would love to hear!!
