HI readers! TGIF (THANK GOD IT'S FRIDAY!!!) First of all, a BIG congratulations goes out to Academy Award winning actress Natalie Portman, who just gave birth to a baby boy last week. It has been QUITE a year for Natalie...not only has she swept all the awards shows this year with her role in the hit thriller movie "Black Swan", she also announced her engagement to Benjamin Millepied, the choreographer from "Black Swan". And now she is a mommy! She must be so incredibly happy right now! As for the name of her boy, it still hasn't been announced, but I am sure it will be something classy and unique...or do you think she will go with a more traditional name?
And speaking of congratulations... a big one should also go out to the team behind the "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides". The summer hit recently became Disney's BIGGEST grossing film of ALL TIME at the international box, taking in $740 million overseas, and the 4th biggest in general (only being beaten by "Avatar", "Titanic" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King"）. If you combine the US box office with the international sales, the latest "Pirates" franchise brought in about $952.2 altogether, making it the top film of 2011 so far! NOT BAD! I am sure this means that there will be a few more films coming out of this hit franchise. Don't you think?
Now in other movie news, Twi-hards everywhere are getting ready for the upcoming Twilight movie "Twilight: Breaking Dawn Pt. 1" which will be featuring the long-awaited wedding for Bella and Edward, characters played by actress Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson. And it was just officially announced who Bella's wedding designer will be...none other than classic American designer Carolina Herrera. Herrera is known in the fashion world for her elegant, timeless and sophisticated style, so it sounds like Bella is in very good hands. Another interesting surprise for Twi-hards in the upcoming Twilight movie, Stephenie Meyer, the author behind the best selling book series, has announced that she makes a cameo appearance in the wedding scene. It was also just announced last week that some of the cast along with Stephenie Meyer will be making an appearance at this year's Comicon in San Diego to show some brand new footage as well as give some insight into the upcoming Twilight film. What do you think? are YOU ready for more Twilight madness???
And speaking of madness, next month brings the FINAL chapter to Harry Potter's journeys with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2". For the past ten years, the Harry Potter franchise has been one of the biggest draws in the movie biz. And now things are finally coming to an end. Or are they? Just last week fans discovered a new site called "Pottermore", and immediately calls from all over the world were bombarding author J.K. Rowling's publicist. It seems that this "Pottermore" site is a new project for Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling. However the publicist went on to add that it is NOT a new book and is also "NOT directly related" to the final Potter film either. Hmmm...what do you think it is, readers?
Last but not least, very good news (at least I THINK it is!) about the Academy Awards. The Academy's Board of Governors announced this week that they have decided to change up the Best Picture nominations so that depending on the year and strength of the submissions, there can be anywhere from 5 to 10 nominations. In recent years there have been 10 Best Picture Nominations, but there have been quite a few complaints about that...people saying that some of the films in that category were just added as "fillers". So now the Academy has decided that they only want to have the strongest movies in the category... I absolutely agree with this decision and think that it isn't necessary to have the same number of Best Picture nominations every year. Just to have THE BEST. So hopefully this will change things a bit from next year.
